You will need a Smog Check every two (2) years if your car is more than six (6) years old and the model year is 1976 or newer. Exceptions are electric, hybrid, or two-cylinder engine vehicles.
Car owners must get a smog check to sell a car more than four (4) years old.
How to Pass Your Smog Check the First Time
The best advice is to perform proper and regular maintenance on your car and to not tamper with the emissions control equipment. Make sure your engine idles smoothly. If it runs rough, or if your “check engine” or “service engine” light is on, have it repaired first. Fix any engine coolant, oil or transmission fluid leaks before your inspection.
If you have Approved Aftermarket parts, you must have the small silver sticker that came with the part. It will have a the A.R.B. approval numbers (ex. EO D-279-2).
